Stakeholder Spotlight with Bob Mann of the National Association of Landscape Professionals

13 June 2024

Q: What are your 2024 priorities for NALP?
NALP supports the robust statutory and regulatory framework at both the federal and state level that undergirds pesticides and their use. Through our extensive engagement with our industry allies and government regulatory agencies, NALP’s goal is to ensure that our uses of these vital pesticide products for the protection of turfgrass and ornamental trees and shrubs is well understood and supported.

Q: What threats and opportunities do you see for NALP and your members?
There is a small but vocal minority that steadfastly opposes the use of pesticides for any purpose and engages in activism that attacks this carefully constructed regulatory framework. NALP supports the EPA’s Office of Pesticide Programs and each state’s Lead State Agency in their quest to ensure that the letter and spirit of the Federal Insecticide Fungicide and Rodenticide Act is upheld. In doing this we relish the opportunity to point the many environmental and human health benefits of properly managed lawns and landscapes.

Q: Why is 2,4-D an important tool for Landscape Professionals?
Ask any lawn care professional and they will tell you that the number one reason that customers cancel their service is the failure to control weeds. 2,4-D has been the cornerstone selective broadleaf herbicide in the professional lawn care industry for over five decades. The ability of 2,4-D to successfully control troublesome weeds like dandelions without harming established turfgrass is a key benefit. What’s more, if you combine 2,4-D with other selective broadleaf herbicides, a synergistic effect occurs in which all  herbicides are more effective. There’s a good reason that 2,4-D is still around after all this time – it works as advertised!

NALP: The National Association of Landscape Professionals advocates for lawn and landscape industry growth and the benefits we provide to our communities.
