Spring Tip #3

Spring Tip #3

Can I apply herbicides to my lawn during hot summer temperatures?

🌡️

Hot Weather Herbicide Application: Timing is Everything!

Applying herbicides during extreme heat (above 85°F) can stress your lawn and reduce effectiveness. Here’s what you need to know:

Best Practices:

  • Apply early morning (6-10 AM) when temps are cooler
  • Avoid midday applications when sun is strongest
  • Evening applications work too, but ensure no dew is expected
  • Check the forecast – avoid days over 90°F

Why Temperature Matters:

  • High heat can cause herbicides to volatilize (evaporate) before they work
  • Stressed grass is more susceptible to herbicide damage
  • Hot conditions can cause leaf burn when combined with chemicals

Better Alternatives:

  • Wait for cooler days (70-85°F is ideal)
  • Focus on proper watering and mowing during heat waves
  • Plan herbicide treatments for early fall when weeds are actively growing

Signs to Wait:

  • Your grass looks stressed or dormant
  • Soil is bone dry
  • Heat index warnings are active

⚠️

Safety Reminder:

Always read and follow all product label directions, including temperature restrictions. When in doubt, wait for cooler weather – your lawn will thank you!
